In Vitro Fertilization - IVF Process
The acronyms, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization), GIFT (Gamete Intra-Fallopian Transfer), and TOT (Tubal Ovum Transfer), may be confusing when trying to differentiate one from the other. In all three ART procedures, your ovaries are stimulated with medication to produce mature eggs, which are then removed from your ovaries just prior to ovulation. In IVF, this process of egg retrieval is performed using vaginal ultrasound in our adjacent office-based operating room at the Follas Center for Reproductive Medicine. Your physician anesthesiologist, Dr. Amy Delumpa or her associate, provides IV sedation for your comfort to minimize/eliminate any discomfort. Our Laboratory Director, Andrew Weston, Ph.D., or embryologist, Kass, will help fertilize your eggs and culture the resulting embryos in the IVF lab. Three to five days later, your fertilized embryos are transferred through your cervix, guided by abdominal ultrasound to assure proper placement of the embryos into your uterus.
