Excessive Menstrual Bleeding
Prolonged menstrual bleeding with heavy periods, irregular bleeding, sometimes cramping, may be due to irregular ovulation, uterine fibroids (fibroid tumors), endometrial polyps, endometrial hyperplasia and even cancer. Our patients are advised to notify us if their periods occur closer than every 21 days, last more than 10 days or if you bleed greater than 1 soaked pad (2 tampons) per hour. Pelvic ultrasound may be recommended to further delineate uterine abnormalities. Additionally, by inserting saline into the uterine cavity, endometrial polyps or submucosal fibroids may be identified in the office. An outpatient Hysteroscopy and D&C will help further diagnose and possibly treat this problem with fibroid tumor removal or removal of polyps. Often your cycles will improve with a natural progesterone, birth control pills/patch or the insertion of a progesterone containing Mirena IUD. If your family is complete, the pelvic organs can be removed, often using the daVinci robot system to minimize the time you need for recovery.
