Why You Should Not Fear Menopause Treatment
Posted on March 28, 2016 9:15 AM by Dr. Mac
By 2020 more than 50 million US women will be older than 51 years old, which is the mean age when menopause occurs. 3/4 of these women experience moderate - severe symptoms for a decade or longer. Hot flashes often disrupt sleep and may cause mood changes, difficulty concentrating and impairment of short-term memory. Systemic HRT is the most effective treatment to keep a woman productive and healthy.
Many women are confused and anxious since the publication of the Women's Health Initiative in 2002. In the past decade and a half, nearly 80% of women who could benefit from HRT have been too frightened to receive treatment. Adding to their anxiety, consulting their physician may not have lead to appropriate treatment that improves their qualify of life. Hormone therapy prescriptions from OB/GYN's, family doctors, and internists have markedly decreased during this time period.
What is a vibrant, young-thinking, active menopausal patient, who may think she's going crazy, to do? It is certainly reasonable to obtain a 2nd opinion from health care providers who have specialized in safely treating and monitoring HRT for their patients for several decades.
